With 30 years of experience in both online business and in brick and mortar, I have a unique insightes into many aspects of many businesses. I’ve run launched hosting companies, affiliate marketing programs, VPN company, outsourcing (regrettable), restaurants, welding/fabrication, small hotels, and even boat building and fishing charters. Who the heck is Capt Mike?
I launched my first business—a hosting and web design company—in 1997. We built one of the most visited free hosting services in the world, ranking 3rd or 4th globally according to Alexa in 1999. Along the way, we ran the largest webmaster message board, which became a powerful marketing hub for affiliate programs, nutritional product launches, and trade shows.
By 2012, I had offices in Florida, Minnesota, and the Philippines. That year, I sold my stake and “retired” to Thailand at age 30. The retirement lasted all of eight months. I rented a building, set up offices, and launched a business incubator to bring my ideas to life. After seven failed ventures, I struck gold with three successes, generating over $27 million in revenue by 2014.
But in 2015, I hit a wall. Burned out, divorced, and barely present in my children’s lives, I was a single father with maids, drivers, and nannies doing what I should have been. So, I walked away from everything. With just a few thousand dollars and my kids, I moved to Cambodia to live simply and opened a beach restaurant—Capt Mike’s.
For three years, life was beautiful. I remarried, had four more children, ran a thriving beach restaurant, and built three boats to support a fishing charter and cruise ship waste removal business.
Then, everything collapsed. The Chinese government moved in—first economically, then forcefully—and we lost our beach property with a week’s notice. A flood came next, then COVID, and finally our new place burned to the ground. No insurance. No safety net. What followed was too personal and dark for here, but the end result was this: I was alone with my two boys, stripped of everything—passports, visas, and hope. We were lured to an island and held in forced labor for nearly a year.
In December 2024, we secured help from the U.S. Embassy and finally made it home—to Tennessee. Today, it’s me, my two teenage sons, and my elderly father, starting over.
